NICHOLI IRENE (POLITES) CANNON
Softly in the morning of November 3, 2024, Nicholi Irene Cannon, heard a gentle call, and taking the hand God offered her, quietly left us all.
Nikki, as she was lovingly known by all, was born in Akron, Ohio on May 25, 1946 to her late parents, Joseph and Mary Irene (Krynick) Polites. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lowell Cannon.
Living in Akron her entire life, Nikki attended Glover Elementary School, Goodrich Jr. High, and was a 1964 graduate of Garfield High School. She graduated from the University of Akron in 1968, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in education, was past president of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, and a member of Delta Mu Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Education Sorority. Nikki’s passion and God given gift was music. As an educator, she wanted to share her love of music with others, which she did for 30 years in the Akron Public Schools. She taught at Firestone Park Elementary, Barrett Elementary, and Roswell Kent Middle School. Nikki was very involved with her church and again, she shared her love of music as the pianist organist, and choir director at First United Methodist Church. She spent summers at Penn State as a participant in the Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians Choral and Choreography Workshops, served on the executive board of the Children’s Concert Society and in 2009, the University of Akron College of Education awarded Nikki the Distinguished Alumni Award.
Nikki is survived by and will be greatly missed by many family members, friends, and students and her journey has left an indelible imprint in their lives and on their hearts. “Music is the universal language of mankind.”
Family and friends are welcome for visitation on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, Hecker-Patron Funeral Home, 13151 Cleveland Avenue, NW, Uniontown, where the service will follow at 12:00 pm.
